13 Sep Discover the process of creating leading customised cosmetic formulations
Leading cosmetic formulations under a "client first" philosophy
At Cosmewax, our R+DI+i team works with a “client first” philosophy that allows us to develop tailor-made cosmetic formulations while working under a flexible and customised system. Discover how our market-leading cosmetic formulation development process works, all the way from receiving the customer brief to industrial scale-up.
- RECEIVING THE BRIEF
When it comes to creating new cosmetic formulations, several strategies can be implemented. These include like 4 like and exclusive cosmetic formulations. But what is the difference?
– Like 4 like: This strategy involves taking a product that is already on the market as a benchmark and reproducing its characteristics in terms of texture, sensitivity, active ingredients, packaging, etc.
– Exclusive formulation: This strategy entails the development of exclusive and innovative formulations for brands based on their specifications, target audiences and the regulations of each cosmetic market.
The close and flexible relationship we enjoy with our customers allows us to experiment with different cosmetic formulations and textures, meaning we can customise our products according to any need.
- CHARACTERISATION
Our technical team analyses the ingredients, ascertains the percentages of active ingredients in an effective dose, defines claims, identifies comparable products and conducts various sensory and physical-chemical analyses, etc.
The aim is to find the formula that best meets the requirements.
- DEVELOPING THE FORMULATION AND DEFINING THE PACKAGING
A formulation is developed according to the sensory, texture, active ingredient and packaging requirements defined in the brief.
Our vast portfolio of bases supports us in the formulation development process. This can be customised with extracts, active ingredients, aromas and colours to suit the customer’s brand identity.
- LOVERS TESTS
Lovers tests are internal consumer tests that are conducted before the product is marketed to ensure its excellence.
We have a team that is dedicated to analysing consumer feedback after testing our products. This allows us to identify opportunities for improvement.
We can conduct two types of tests:
- Comparative test, if the developed product is based on a benchmark product.
- Use and efficacy test.
- APPROVAL OF THE FORMULATION
Prototypes are sent to the client for approval.
- PRODUCT TESTS
We conduct stability and compatibility tests to predict the evolution of the product during its shelf life.
We also conduct challenge tests, the necessary safety tests and efficacy tests with accredited external laboratories.
- PILOT PLANT
Once the stability, compatibility and challenge tests have been completed with satisfactory results, a pilot plant (30-60kg) is conducted to define the industrial process and to determine its feasibility.
- INDUSTRIAL SCALE-UP
We’re now ready! When all previous steps have been completed, we proceed with industrial scale-up.
At Cosmewax, we have two Research and Development laboratories equipped with the latest technology and infrastructure, which guarantees high cosmetic innovation and products of the highest quality for our customers.
In addition to developments under like 4 like or exclusive formulation strategies based on a customer’s request, we also develop products proactively in line with our Annual Innovation Plan based on trend analysis, market research and new starting materials.
In 2021, we launched more than 100 new formulations and opened more than 400 product developments.
